I just got a new puppy - now what do I do?

"Your pup's first month in your home is the most crucial developmental period of his life. This short, make-or-break period pretty much determines whether your puppy will develop into a well-mannered and good-natured companion that will bring joy to your life for many years to come, or whether your puppy will develop numerous, predictable behavior problems and grow up to be fearful and unfriendly. You stand at the crossroads. The course of your prospective puppy's development is in your hands."
       - Dr. Ian Dunbar PhD, BVetMed, MRCVS, CPDT

Congratulations on your new addition! Adding a new puppy to your family is very exciting and rewarding. Puppies entertain us with their clumsy exploration of their world. Their sweet and innocent baby-like ways bring out our nurturing side. And who can resist the distinctive smell of puppy breath!

It's hard to believe that your sweet little eight week old baby will be an adolescent in just a couple of short months. Yet he will. What you do now in terms of socialization and training will shape the dog your puppy will eventually become. Will your puppy grow up to be the dog of your dreams? He will if you teach him how to be that dream dog.

This series of articles are meant for new puppy owners. In these articles you will discover the importance of and how to socialize your new puppy. You will also learn how to house train, crate train, prevent destructive chewing, teach your puppy bite inhibition, prevent resource guarding and teach your puppy to not only accept, but enjoy being handled.
